Today Highway US-50 follows the route of the historic pony express trail across the mostly barren Northern Nevada Desert. This highway has the fitting nickname of "The Loneliest Road in America".

• Great Basin National Park - Diverse landscape including limestone caves, tall peaks, aspen forests, glacial lakes and alpine meadows. It is located just a very short distance off the main trail near the Nevada-Utah border.

• Sand Springs Pony Express Station
  Located 20 miles east of Fallon near Sand Mountain. This is one of the few true "singing mountains" of the world. The shifting sand sometimes creates a low moan.
