Gondolas drifting across a 586,000-gallon lagoon in the middle of the Nevada desert and life-size replicas of Italiam icons. This $1.5 billion resort is Venice, Vegas style.

This 3,036-room, 35-story palace recreates the elegance of Italy with duplicates of many famous landmarks such as the Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge. Developer Sheldon Adelson employed over 250 sculptors, designers and artists to create a lot of ornate statuary and artwork to set this resort apart from all others. His goal was to combine the romance of Venice with the luxury of Beverly Hills and the excitement of Vegas.

Opened in 1999, a second tower (the Lido) with another 3,000 plus rooms is schedule for completion in 2001. Each of the guest rooms feature over 700 square feet of living space, making them among the largest sized standard suites in Las Vegas. Bathrooms are finished in fine Italian marble.

Be forewarned, this opulent resort is targeted for the affluent, high-end travel market and coveted high-rollers.
