Jefferson National Expansion Memorial - National Historic Site

Established 1935 on the Riverfront at Market St to commemorate the westward expansion of the United States during the 19th Century. The park's 91 acres covers the approximate site of the original St. Louis settlement. Prominent features include:
Gateway Arch
630-foot high stainless steel landmark.
Museum of Westward Expansion
Extensive collection of artifacts and exhibits depicting the natural and cultural history of the American West.
Old Courthouse

Completed in 1862, this landmark is the site of the Dred Scott slavery trail. Courthouse galleries and dioramas depict life under the French and Spanish, the western expansion and through to the present.
Laclede's Landing
Visitor Center at Washington and Memorial Drive; (314) 241-5874;
Open: Daily 9:30-4:30PM; Free Admission;
Renovated nine-block historic district on the Riverfront between Washington Ave and Eads Bridge. These turn-of-the-20th-Century buildings and cobblestone streets are now filled with shops, restaurants and offices. Nearby is the Eads Bridge which was the first steel truss bridge in the world and the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River.

The Gateway Arch

The biggest landmark in Eastern Missouri (besides the River) is the giant 630 feet high inverted stainless steel catenary. It is located directly over the site of Pierre de Laclede's house and trading post. This monument was built in 1963-65 to memorialize the gateway to the west for thousands of 19th-century pioneers.
Ride the Tram - The tram carries visitors to an observation deck at the top of the arch. Ticket is required. A round trip takes 30-40 minutes.
Tucker Theater - special presentions about the settlement of the west.
World Odyssey Theater - four-story wide-screen theater.
Museum of Western Expansion

Located directly beneath the arch is this extensive collection of artifacts from the Lewis and Clark expedition. There are many other exhibits about the natural and cultural histor of the exploration and settlement of the west.
