This town traces its roots back to 1733, when Jean Baptiste Girardot first established a trading post here. Early settlers were Spanish immigrants lured here by Spain's offer of inexpensive and tax-exempt land. River trade flourished before the Civil War. Industry surged again in the 1880's with the arrival of new railroad lines.
