Scenic trail follows the path of the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas
Railroad (AKA the Katy), roughly parallel to the Missouri River.
In 1986 when the railroad ceased operations, in donated the corridor
to the state park system, creating an extraordinary long-distance
biking and hiking route.
Today, Katy Trail is recognized as the longest rails to trails conversion
in the country stretching some 225 miles from
from St. Charles to Sedalia. It passes thru a wide variety of
topography, including dense forests, wetlands, deep valleys, remnant
prairies and rolling farmland.
Along the trail you can find a wide variety of wildlife and it covers a great part of the Missouri River flyway for migrating birds. Watch for great blue herons, sandpipers, red-tailed haks, turkey vultures, robins, orioles, bald eagle, Canadian geese and many others.
