The White House has been the home of every American President except for George Washington. Designed by James Hoban in 1792. The West Wing, where the President's Oval Office is, was added in 1902. In 1948-52 a major renovation was done to completely rebuild the interior, but the exterior walls were left preserved.

Current public tours visit the East, Green, Blue and Red rooms, the State Dining Room on the State floor and the Vermeil Room and Library on the ground floor. On display are antiques and furnishings from prior administrations, many dating back to the early 19th century. Portraits of former White House occupants are displayed.

The National Park Service distributes only a very limited number of tickets from their visitor center on E and 15th Sts. You must be early (i.e. 7:30AM) to get them. From June-Aug there is covered seating on the Ellipse for visitors awaiting schedule tours and entertainment is provided.

During the Christmas season, evening candlelight tours are available.
