Winnipeg (pop: 641,500) is the capital city and largest settlement in Manitoba Province. It is located near the longitudinal centre of North America, at the confluence of the historic Red and Assiniboine Rivers, a point now commonly known as The Forks. Winnipeg was a historic trading centre for First Nations people. The first fort was built on the site in 1738 by French traders. Winnipeg is home to many attractions, events, and festivals, year round. According to Guinness, Winnipeg claimed the title for the world's longest skating rink in the world, along the Red and Assiniboine rivers beating Ottawa's Rideau Canal. The Forks, where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, brings locals and visitors alike to its shops, river walkways and festivals. It is home to the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, Winnipeg International Children's Festival, the Manitoba Children's Museum, a 30,000 square foot skate plaza, bowl complex, and the Esplanade Riel bridge. Winnipeg is also the future home of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. |
