Queens
When visiting New York you'll probably want to take a day trip (or two) to see the many attractions at Flushing Meadows Corona Park which was the site to two major world fairs.
If you're in the mood for the outdoors, then visit the wildlife refuge at Jamaica Bay.

American Museum of the Moving Image

Located in the former Astoria Studio operated by Paramount Pictures in the 1920's, the museum chronicles the art, history, and technology of motion pictures. Changing exhibitions and special screenings are also featured here.
The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum

Formerly the Flushing Meadows Zoo, located on the site of the 1964 World's Fair (Flushing Meadows Corona Park), this facility is a tribute to spectacular American wildlife. Find over 400 animals of 70 species roaming naturalistic habitats representing the wild lands of both North and South America. It opened to the public in 1992 after a major $16 million reconstruction.
The zoo perimeter is a nature pathway that leads guests from one wildland to another, giving one the feal of being inside a small national park. Wildlife includes bison, mountain lions, sea lions, bald eagles, elk, bears and more. Of special note:

Visitors can follow nature trails amongst 38 acres of rose, rock and formal gardens. An active beehive is the centerpoint of a wildflower meadow. Also visit arboretum, pinetum and woodlands. Available for weddings.
Queens Museum of Art

One of the best science museums in America is in Flushing Park - located on 111th St at 46th Ave. This museum includes many (over 225) hands-on interactive exhibits making science fun for children.

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
From the Belt Pkwy, use exit 17 and head 3 miles south on Crossbay Blvd;

9,155-acre refuge with varied habitats including freshwater ponds, marshes, bays, fields, woods and islands. Major stopover point for migrating birds (over 329 species counted since 1950.) A 1.75 mile walking trail starts from the visitor center.
