The Bronx Zoo first opened in 1899 and the largest urban zoo in the U.S., over 4,000 animals on 265 acres. Use the monorail train to get a na tour of the best exhibits. Major exhibits include:


Congo Gorilla Forest - 6.5 acre African rain forest habitat is home to 400 animals from 55 species, including 23 lowland gorillas, one of the largest breeding groups in North America.

• African Plains - in 1941 this was one of the first exhibits to move away from cages and exhibit animals (both predators and prey) in more naturalistic settings. Here you can see both lions and nyala (separated by a moat) in a setting similar to the great savannas of Africa. Visitor can find out how a rain forest works and what environmental threats it faces today.
