Located less than one hour east of New York City, you can find lots of recreational adventures amongst the natural and historical treasures of this wildernes area.
Fire Island itself is a barrier island that stretches over 32 miles eastward from Moriches Inlet to Fire Island Inlet. Fire Island was received federal designation in 1964. It includes 15 hamlets and 2 villages.
Recreation Opportunities include Boating, Camping and miles of Scenic Hiking Trails.
Fire Island Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, red fox and many species of birds.
Noteworthy sites include:
Sunken Forest - 300-year-old holly forest. Very exceptional phenomena for the harsh environment of a barrier island. The forest is sheltered from the harsh salt water spray by the large dunes. Its 1.5 mile long boardwalk is a favorite destination for visitors.
Otis Pike Fire Island Wilderness - Federal protected wilderness area on the eastern 7-mile portion of Fire Island. This 1300-acre preserve covers from Watch Hill to Smith Point. Camping is permitted and wildlife is abundant.
Fire Island Lighthouse - Still operated today by the U.S. Coast Guard, the lighthouse museum and tower has exhibits, nature trail, and educational programs. Located near Robert Moses State Park.
William Floyd Estate - Located on the mainland near Mastic, NY, it is included in the eastern tip of F.I.N.S. William Floyd was a Revolutionary War general and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was born here in 1734 and over eight generations of the Floyd family have lived here.
