Region Overview

Jamaica (pop. 2.5 million) is a former British colony that gained independence in 1962. This tropical rain forest island is full of pirate hideouts, plantation houses and sacred indian sites.

It is also the birthplace of reggae and homestage for various annual music festivals. Caribbean calypso music is also very popular. Mingle with fire-eaters and limbo dancers.

Minor resort area located on the north coast just 23 miles east of Montego Bay.

Tour St. Ann's Bay

St. Ann's Bay is a major historical area located ten miles west of Ocho Rios.

This is site of Seville - Great House and Heritage Park. Columbus was shipwrecked here on his forth and final expedition in 1503. He and his crew lived here for a year before being rescued at the largest Arawak settlement on the island.

The first spanish capital was here (1509-1534) before being moved to to Spanish Town on the south side of the island. In 1655 British conquerors resettled the area. A major sugar plantation and great house was built in 1754 and is today the basis of a 300-acre estate and small museum overseeing the ruins from early Arawak, Spanish and British residents.

Tour Mandeville

Sitting on a 2,000 ft plateau in the interior is this colorful town. Mandeville is home to a large North American expatraite community primarily engaged in bauxite mining. This region is generally cooler than the coastal resorts.

History

Jamaica was discovered by Columbus in 1494. First settled by the Spaniards in 1509 at St. Anns Bay, it was captured by the English in 1655. In the 17th century it gained notariety as a haven for pirates. In 1692 a massive earthquake hit the island.

A large black slave population was gathered in the 18th century to work the many sugar plantations at which time Jamaica was the leading sugar producer of the world. After the abolition of slavery in 1838, poverty and British racial policies led to many years of civil unrest.

During 1958-62, Jamaica was briefly part of the West Indies Federation before becoming a independent member of the Commonwealth.

Recreational Activities

  • Watersports - Jamaica has some of the best diving waters in the world. Visibility is normally 60-120 feet and the average depth is 35-95 feet. Many underwater parks have been created to protect local coral reefs.

  • Sailing - Many resorts and public beaches around the island offer sailboat rentals.
