Nature preserve covering over 15,000 acres along the souther shore of Lake Michigan and traversed by a scenic stretch of US-12.

This area accommodates an unusual ecosystem of dunes, marsh, swamps, bogs, ponds, plants and animals. Strong northwest winds, continuously add new sand deposits along the shore. The largest dune, 123-foot high Mount Baldy, moves 4 to 5 feet south every year.

Local flora and fauna are a diverse collection of southern dogwood, arctic bearberry, plains flowers, desert cactus and other species that are generally uncommon to the area. A large number of migration routes cross here, bringing a equally diverse collection of birdlife.

Popular activities include swimming, camping and fishing (License required) at the West, Central and Kemil beaches.

Old Sauk Trail - centuries old American Indian trail.
Bailly-Chellberg Trail - 2-mile trail passes by fur-trader homestead and 19th-century Chellberg Farm.
Calumet Dune Trail - 0.5-mile trail originates at the visitor center.
Ky-co-ki-we Trail - popular cross-country ski route.
