In 1876, the Chicago White Stockings become one of eight charter members of the National League led by their president William A. Hulbert, who was also the owner of the Chicago club. A.G. Spalding is the manager when the team plays its first game in the history of the Chicago National League Ball Club that takes place on April 25. Spalding doubles as the pitcher and records the first NL shutout, a 4-0 win over Louisville. By 1907, the team had adopted the name of Cubs, noting the large attendence by local youth.

Wrigley Park is the second oldest major league ballpark, completed in 1914. The wall vines were added in 1937 and lights finally arrived in 1988.

In 1900, only one year after the American League was christened in Chicago, the rumor of the St. Paul franchise in the Western League moving to Chicago became a reality. Playing as a Chicago baseball team for the first time, the White Stockings defeated the University of Illinois, 10-9, in Champaign.

The new Comiskey Park opened on April 18, 1991. The new park features an exploding scoreboard, an old-time facade complete with arches and over 40,000 unobstructed-view seats.
