MainTour Kauai Hawaii

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge site is home to many varieties of seabirds, booby, and Laysan albatross, nene goose and the rare Hawaiian green sea turtle. Also home to Hawaiian monk seal, humpback whales and dolphins.

Kilauea Point Lighthouse - built in 1913 but no longer in use. Excellent vantage point to see humpback whales - December through May.

North shore includes the following exotic wilderness locales and attractions:

• Na Pali Coast - includes many hidden sea caves

• Kalalau Valley - remote valley accessable only by a 11 mile hike or by coastal boat excursion. Ancient hula heiau stands at the trail head.

• Mount Makana - Movie buffs will recognize this spot as Bali Hai in the great musical classic South Pacific.

  Tours of local tropical gardens on the North Shore.
  Lawai Garden is a 186 acre garden of rare and unusual tropical plants from around the world. Includes gargantuan Morton Bay Fig Trees - scene of filming for Jurassic Park.
  Allerton Garden, oceanfront location, is another 100 acres of tropical plants, pools, and fountains.

  Regularly referred to as a golfers paradise:
  Makai Course has 27 holes (three 9-hole segments) par 72. Includes a 10,331 yeard championship range.
  Prince Course has 18 holes, par 72. Includes a 7,309 championship range.
  Facilities include driving range, snack bar, putting green, whirlpool, and restaurant.

The West side of Kauai includes the famous Waimea Canyon, The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

This area is covered with emerald green fields of sugar cane. Major features include:

• Hanapepe - active artists colony.

• Fort Waimea - Russian fort built 1815 by the Russian-America Company under treaty with Kauai Chief Kaumuali'i.

• Salt Ponds of Hanapepe - Active salt harvest by descendents still working their ancestral plots. Their specialty is creating the famous Kauai red salt.

  Small but informative natural history museum includes major display on Pacific weather displays, wildlife, history and culture, gift shops, guided hikes of the state park area.

  Open Daily 9:30AM - 9:30PM, except Sun closes at 5PM.
  Grand sugar-cane estate of the Wilcox family built in 1935. 35 acres of tropical foliage, displays, antiques, restaurant, shops and carriage rides.

• Waioli Mission House Museum - 808-245-3202
  PO Box 1631, Lihue, HW 96766
  Tues, Thurs, Sat only 9AM-3PM.
  Built in 1837 as home for missionary teachers Lucy and Abner Wilcox. Includes Waioli social hall, built 1841 and the Waioli Huila Church, built 1912.
