Tour Honolulu Overview
Honolulu was not an important place until the arrivial of the Europeans in the mid-19th century. Since they found adjacent Pearl Harbor to be a convenient place to anchor, King Kamehameha found it necessary to move his capital here.
Honolulu is the principal city on the island of Oahu and is in fact the largest city and capital of the Hawaiian Islands. Capital of Hawaii since 1845. During the 19th cent. it was a busy whaling and trading port, occupied successfully by Russian, British and French forces. During World War II it was the principal staging area for the Ameican battle with Japan and also site of the infamous Pearl Harbor Raid.
Downtown Honolulu is quite different and distinct from the Waikiki Beach district on the east side which is the biggest resort center in Hawaii.
Another place for a scenic stroll is Kewalo Basin. Located along Ala Moana Blvd is the home port for sightseeing cruise boats and charter fishing boats and other unique watercraft.
