Grand Junction is so named for the junction of two major area rivers - the Grand (now called the Colorado) and Gunnison Rivers. It is also the economic center for the fertile Grand Valley - a leading producer of peaches, cherries and other major crops. To the west is the remarkable Colorado National Monument and to 35 miles to the east is Powderhorn Ski Resort.
This region of Mesa County is home to 110,000 residents at an approximate elevation of 4,586 feet.

Hiking along the scenic Colorado River.
18 mile paved pathway (no motor vehicles allowed) takes you upclose

Exhibits of dinosaur bones and other fossils recovered from
nearby region. Also included are animated dinosaurs and a working
paleontology lab. Actual dinosaur dig sites located nearby
include Riggs Hill, Dinosaur Hill and Rabbit Valley.

Located at the Watson island trailhead of the Colorado River Trail

This non-profit, interactive children's museum focuses each
exhibit on child development. Children and parents can have a fun

Colorado National Monument

A 20,454 acre preserse, Colorado National Monument is a incredible collection of 600-foot deep canyons and iolated monoliths including Independence Monument, Balanced Rock, Coke Ovens, and Pipe Organ. This sandstone artwork of nature is the result of extraordinary erosion forces.
Most of these features are readily visible by following the SR-340 scenic drive from either Fruita or Grand Junction.
Visitor Center - located near Fruita Entrance, exhibits cover
the geological and social history of the monument.
Flora and Fauna - the area is
also prime juniper and pinyon pine forest. Also look for colorful
wildflowers in the spring.
Wildlife - small mammals, reptiles
and birds of prey.
Saddlehorn Campground - campgrounds
and backcountry camping areas.
