20,756 acre preserve covering a 12-mile stretch of the deepest portion of the Gunnison River gorge. Here the river has penetrated 2,700 feet into the oldest base rock found anywhere on earth. Dark colored granite rock dates back to the Precambrian era.

Primary Features / Scenic points to not miss:

South Rim Overlook and Visitor Center: Observation post reached by Colorado SR-347 off of US-50, 8 miles east of Montrose. Visitor center includes museum exhibits on geology, flora and fauna.

North Rim Overlook: Reached by a 11-mile road leaving from SR-92, just east of Crawford. Note this unimproved road has no guardrails and follows the rimedge of steep canyons.
