| Estes Park, (pop: 5,900 / elev 7570 ft, founded 1859) in Larimer County, is a popular summer resort and the location of the headquarters for Rocky Mountain National Park. Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous highway in the United States, runs from Estes Park westward through Rocky Mountain National Park, reaching Grand Lake over the continental divide.
Every autumn hundreds of elk from the surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park and Forests descend on the town of Estes Park. Here they engage in rutting and mating. The big male bulls let looses with lots of boisterous cries to call up mates and to intimidate other bulls. You might even get to see some of these 1100-pound animals lock horns in a battle for dominance of the herd.
