Cripple Creek

Founded in 1891 when young Bob Womack found gold on his uncle's cattle ranch. In two years a townsite was founded and gained a population of 18,000. In 1896 fire destroyed most structures, but many were rebuilt in brick at that time.

Many gold mining camps are found in this district that yielded over $300,000 over the next 80 years. Victor was another prosperous gold mining town located nearby.

The mine entrance is at an altitude of about 10,000 feet. Interior temperature is a constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Very easy tour conducts a slow walk with no ladders or stairs to climb.

Adventure Mining Trails
Experience mountain off-roaders can try to follow either the Gold Camp Road or the Phantom Canyon Road.

Victor, Colorado

Victor was a hard-living mining town founded in 1893 on the slopes of Battle and Squaw Mountains. By 1900 it had a population of over 12,000 who worked on nearly 500 mines in the immediate area. 70 trains a day hauled gold ore out to the mills in Colorado City (today's Colorado Springs). From 1891 to 1961 over $800 million worth of gold was dug out - mostly from Independence and Portland mines.

In 1899 a fire leveled nearly all of the hastily erected wooden buildings in town. Since then the town was rebuilt with the brick buildings visible today.

Today the Victor's draws tourist who come to shop the local antique stores and gift shops. Others take in camping, fishing or hiking in the nearby forests.
