Tour St. Lucia

St. Lucia (pop. 155,000) is located in the Lesser Antilles near Martinique. Its capital is Castries and English is the official language.

It is a classic example of a lush tropical rain forest island. Numerous sugar plantations once covered the island.

The island history reflects that control of the island switched fourteen times between the British and French until the British got permanent possession in 1814. Today St. Lucia is a member of the British Commonwealth.

• Soufriere - major city on southeast side of island. Founded 1746 in the crater of an extinct volcano. French colonial architecture predominates.
• The Pitons - Twin peaks south of Soufriere, rising 2,619 ft.
• Mount Soufriere - Dormant volcano.
• Vieux Fort - almost the oldest settlement on island.
• Maria Islands - off the coast from Vieux Fort.
• Fregate Islands - off the east coast. Abundant wildlife includes boa constrictors and caribbean frigate birds.
