Small colonial isle, St. Barthelemy (pop. 3,050) has its
capital in Gustavia. An intimate setting for a few wealthy jet-setting

Formerly a French colony founded 1645, it was ceded in 1784 to Sweden.
Its capital was then named in honor of Swedish King Gustaf. In 1878
Sweden returned the island to France.
The principal island is La Tortue but there are over a dozen smaller
and more secluded islands close by. It is a great spot for sportsfishing,
sailing and diving.
The Inter-Oceans Museum is favorite stopping place for sea shell
afficionados. Over 3,400 types of shells from around the world are
on display here.
Best island beaches include Anse de Grande Saline and
Anse du Gouverneur.
