Tour Belize Guide

This small country on the east coast of Central America features dense jungles, mangrove swamps, scenic mountain ranges and white sandy beaches. Just off shore is the Great Barrier Reef, the longest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere. The native population is about 200,000 and English is the official language although Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and Mayan are also spoken.

Deep in its forests you will find ancient ruins of the great Mayan Empire which flourished here for over 500 years.

The Mayan Empire flourished from about 350 to 850 A.D. before mysteriously disappearing. They left behind many awe inspiring city and temple ruins some of which are located in the jungles of Belize.

• Museum of Belize - Currently under construction, this place will house many artifacts and treasures collected from the local Mayan historical sites. These treasures are currently on display nearby at the Archeology Commission.
• Xuanatunich - Ancient Mayan city ruins includes several 1,400 year old stone structures including El Castillo, a 127 foor pyramid. Located 80 miles inland from Belmopan.
• Altun Ha - Another Mayan city near Belize City. Site of the largest piece of Mayan jade ever found, a head of the sun god weighing 9.5 pounds. Three square miles of ruins and artifacts.
• Lubaantun - Mayan ruins adjacent to San Pedro Columbia.
• Nim Li Punit - Exhibits carved stone monuments.

Tour Belize City

Another major tourist destination is the old city of Belize City. With a population of only 60,000 it is able to retain much of its old style charm. Notable landmarks:

• Paslow Building - Colonial design and home of the post office.
• Baron Bliss Institute - Carved mayan stone monuments on display.
• Old Fort George
• St. John's Cathedral - 19th century ediface is the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America.

New capital of Belize and 50 miles inland from Belize City. Population of 5,000.
