Diving Adventures


The waters off Barbados offer excellent underwater adventures. Visibility is typically 100 feet and there are over fifty varieties of colorful fish and offshore reefs including night anemones, lobster, octopus and reef fish. Night dives are also popular for the experienced diver.

Major dive-spots:

• J.R. - Dredgeboat sunk in 1983 provides a shallow artificial reef for beginner divers.

• Berwyn - Tugboat sunk in 1916 in Carlisle Bay in shallow waters. Good ligting and visibility.

• Sandy Beach Reef - Mile long natural coral reef on west coast.

• Asta Reef - Boat sunk in eighty feet of water in 1986. Home to abundant reef fish.

• Dottins Reef - Five mile long natural reef on west coast with numerous dive sites.

• Folkestone Underwater Park - Artificial reef of a Greek freighter sunk in 1976.

Beach Adventures

The southside is the most popular windsurfing area:

• Casuarina Beach - popular windsurfing spot adjacent to the Casuarina Beach Hotel on Maxwell Coast Rd.

• Silver Sands Beach - popular windsurfing spot east of Oistins. Very south tip of the island and popular for Bajans.

• Sandy Beach - with lagoon is popular for families with children.

The East Coast has miles of uncrowded beaches with high waves facing directly to the ocean. There is potential danger to the unexperienced swimmer. The best destinations are in the Bathsheba / Cattlewash areas.

The west part of Barbados is referred to as the "Gold Coast" and has the most tranquil and popular beaches of the island.
