Barbados is an independent soveriegn country of the Commonwealth. The Queen of England also serves as the Queen of Barbados and is represented by the Governor-General.

The original inhabitants of the island were probably Arawak indians whose ruins and artifacts date back to 400 B.C. They were conquered by the warlike Caribs who then reigned on the island for some 300 years.

This island was discovered by Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos in 1536 who named it Barbados - The Bearded Ones probably in reference to the many banyan trees on the island.

The British were the first Europeans to settle the island beginning in the 1600's. They introduced the sugar plantation economy which was able to survive the abolition of slavery in 1834. Barbados served as the territorial capital for Windward Islands before becoming a separate colony in 1885.

Bridgetown was founded in 1628 by 64 British settlers. Today it is home to nearly 100,000 Bajans. Holetown is Barbados oldest British Settlement, sitting on the west coast.

Unlike its neighbors that saw much conflict, Barbados enjoyed 339 years of strife-free uninterrupted British rule before becoming an independent Commonwealth country in 1966. Bajans are proud to retain and show their British heritage.
