Cultural Capital of Australia

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned at the estuary of the Yarra River.

Today, it is a centre for the arts, commerce, industry, education, entertainment, sport and tourism. It is the birthplace of cultural institutions such as Australian film, Australian television, Australian rules football, the Australian impressionist art movement and Australian dance styles It is also a major centre for contemporary and traditional Australian music.

18,400-seat indoor sports arena completed in 1988. It features a retractable roof and hosts a number of major sporting events and concerts. Originally called Flinders Park or Centre Court.

Home to the Australian Open Tennis Tournament, the first of four annual world tournaments called the Grand Slam of Tennis. This tournament originated in 1905 and is held in the middle of the Australian summer, in the last fortnight of the month of January; thus an extreme-heat policy is put into play when temperatures reach dangerous levels.
