Fort Smith Region Overview
In this area the Arkansas River Valley seperates the Ozarks to the north from the Oauchitas to the south. Since this area borders with Oklahoma, formerly the Indian Territory, it gave the area a very distinct rowdy western attitude as a haven for robbers and bandits until the arrival in 1875 of Charles Isaac Parker, aka the Hanging Judge. Parker dispatched 200 marshals to round up fugitives and during his 21 year career, he sentenced 160 bandits to death.
Ft. Smith and Van Buren both have remnants of their western pioneer heritage.

This former rowdy western town in now an industrial city of 70,000.
- Fort Smith National Historic Site - located on Rogers Avenue features remains of the original fort, Parker's courtroom, gallows and basement jail.
Tour Van Buren
Located on the opposite side of the Arkansas River.
