Located 12 miles west of Tucson.
Open daily 10-6, except major holidays (9AM-7PM in summer).
Famous movie location / Western theme park with live-action
entertainment, gunfights, games, rides, shops, restaurants.
Built in 1939 by Columbia Pictures as a replica of 1860's Tucson
for the movie "Arizona". Since then it has been the backdrop
to over 300 major productions including "Tombstone", "High
Chaparral" and "The Young Riders". Other attractions include
Storyteller Theater, 1880's Big Top Circus and musical revues.
- Tumcacori National Monument
Old spanish mission built around 1800 by Franciscan priests
located 40 miles south of Tucson.
- Tubac Presidio State Historic Park 398-2252
Located along the Santa Cruz River, south of Tucson. Arizona's
first state park preserves the ruins of the first European settlement
in Arizona. Third week of October has re-enactment of the overland
exploration of Juan Bautista de Anza II.
- Mission San Xavier del Bac 294-2624
South of Tucson, open daily 9:30-5:30.
Refered to as the "White Dove of the Desert". It is a fine
example of Spanish Mission Architecture with impressive domes,
arches, carvings, flying buttresses, murals and altars. Founded in 1700
the present structure was built 1783-97 by Franciscan priests who were
forced out in 1828 but returned 1911. Primary church for the
Tohono O'odham - two Native American celebrations on the evenings
of Oct 3rd and Dec 2nd. 45 Minute self-guided tours.
