  • Kitt Peak National Observatory 318-8726
    Located about 55 miles west of Southeast Arizona
    Open daily 9-3:45 except holidays
    Guided tours: 10, 11:30, 1, 2:30
    World's largest collection of astronomical telescopes located atop the 7,000 ft Quinlan Mountains. Facilities include 24 major research telescopes, Largest solar telescopes, 4-meter Mayall telescope. Travelers should check road and weather conditions beforehand.

  • Tour Saguaro National Monument
    Located just west of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is this major preserve of the famous forty foot multi-limb saguaro (SWAH-row) cacti. This area is great for backpacking and camping. For more info checkin at the Visitors Center - open daily 9AM-5PM. By the way - there is no water in this park.

  • Tour Biosphere-2
    Located near the desert town of Oracle, north of Tucson, is the giant plexiglass bubble known as Biosphere-2. This was a controversial effort to recreate a totally sealed and self-contained environment and it lasted for two years in the early 90's. This facility today offers guided tours that last 2 and a half hours.

      Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) missile base complex. For over 20 years during the cold war 54 Titan II missiles sat at the ready. By 1987 all had been dismantled except #571-7 which still sits right here in its original 146 foot deep silo. (Don't touch any red buttons!)

      Over 200 vintage and historic aircraft displays including a replica wright flyer and original SR-71 Blackbird (able to fly Mach 3 - over 2,000 MPH). WWII aircraft, helicopters and gift shop.

      Famous movie location / Western theme park with live-action entertainment, gunfights, games, rides, shops, restaurants. Built in 1939 by Columbia Pictures as a replica of 1860's Tucson for the movie "Arizona". Since then it has been the backdrop to over 300 major productions including "Tombstone", "High Chaparral" and "The Young Riders". Other attractions include Storyteller Theater, 1880's Big Top Circus and musical revues.

    • Tumcacori National Monument
      Old spanish mission built around 1800 by Franciscan priests located 40 miles south of Tucson.

    • Tubac Presidio State Historic Park 398-2252
      Located along the Santa Cruz River, south of Tucson. Arizona's first state park preserves the ruins of the first European settlement in Arizona. Third week of October has re-enactment of the overland exploration of Juan Bautista de Anza II.

    • Mission San Xavier del Bac 294-2624
      South of Tucson, open daily 9:30-5:30.
      Refered to as the "White Dove of the Desert". It is a fine example of Spanish Mission Architecture with impressive domes, arches, carvings, flying buttresses, murals and altars. Founded in 1700 the present structure was built 1783-97 by Franciscan priests who were forced out in 1828 but returned 1911. Primary church for the Tohono O'odham - two Native American celebrations on the evenings of Oct 3rd and Dec 2nd. 45 Minute self-guided tours.
