    Open House & Dedication Announcement:
The First Presidency has announced open house and dedication dates for the Gilbert Arizona Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The public is invited to visit the temple during an open house from Saturday, 18 January 2014, through Saturday, 15 February 2014, excluding Sundays. Free reservations for the open house can be made in the coming weeks at the website:

The temple will be formally dedicated on Sunday, 2 March 2014, in three sessions. In conjunction with the dedication of the temple, there will also be a cultural celebration featuring music and dance on Saturday, 1 March 2014.

Once dedicated, the Gilbert Temple will be the 142nd operating temple of the Church worldwide. It is one of four temples in Arizona, with others in Mesa, Snowflake and the Gila Valley. A fifth temple in Phoenix is under construction and a sixth, in Tucson, has been announced.

Announced in 2008, the 4th Arizona Temple of the Mormon Church is nearing construction completion as evidenced in the picture here. This temple will include three ordinance rooms and seven sealing rooms.

Construction was started after the groundbreaking ceremony in Nov 2010. Final work remaining includes Lighting being installed; gold-leaf lithographs being applied; anticipated to be completed in early 2014. An adjacent meetinghouse is also under construction. Both buildings are to be completed before the public open house begins.

The joint announcement of The Gila Valley Arizona Temple and Gilbert Arizona Temple was the first temple announcement made by President Thomas S. Monson after he became president of the Church in February 2008.

The Church has experienced steady growth in Arizona over the past century and baptizes more new converts in Arizona than most other states. There were only three stakes a century ago whereas today there are now 94. Within the past decade, the Church has created 20 new stakes in Arizona - four of which were YSA stakes organized earlier in 2012.

The earliest history of Mormon settlers in the Gilbert Arizona area point to their traveling to attend LDS Church worship services in either nearby Mesa or Chandler. The first branch was established in 1915 at the Gilbert Elementary Schoolhouse (now the Gilbert Historical Museum). In 1918 the Gilbert Ward was organized with Arthur S Haymore Sr. called as the first bishop and given permission to find land and build a chapel.

After eight long years, an adobe chapel was completed. Noteworthy for its archecture and appearance, the members began to call it the Adobe Ward.

    Temple District Stakes

The Gilbert Arizona Temple is expected to serve members in the East Valley who live roughly south of US Highway 60. Other outlying Arizona stakes may also be included. A final determination will be made before the temple is dedicated.
