Tuzigoot National Monument

Located just two miles north of Cottonwood is preserved the ruins
of a major pueblo occupied by the Sinagua Indians from about 1000 A.D. to
1425 A.D. when it was abandoned. The visitors center displays tools,
jewelry, pottery and other artifacts recovered from the over 110 rooms.

Oak Creek Canyon
Oak Creek Canyon
This canyon is about 16 miles long and less than a mile wide and is
one of the best scenic highways in Arizona. Follow SR-89A north from
Sedona and you will see the cnyons impressively colored white, yellow
and red cliffs spotted with pine, cypress and juniper trees. Some unusual
rock formations and gorges are seen along the way. Forest service
camping and
fishing sites are found along the canyon.

Well preserved ruins of native cliff dwellings dating
to the 12th and 13th centuries. Five story castle was inhabited
by the Sinagua Indians and at one time only accessible by ladders.
More ruins are found near Beaver Creek. The visitors center
contains many artifacts found in the ruins.

Montezuma Well
Located about 11 miles northeast is a giant
limestone sinkhole, 470 feet wide and 55 feet deep, with
more indian cliff dwellings. Still visible are irrigation ditches
dug in the 13th century. The limestone rock in this area is
full of underground caverns and streams. One such cavern collapsed
and created this giant sinkhole.

Camp Verde
Orginally founded in 1866 as Camp Lincoln
by Arizona Volunteers to defend pioneers from Apache raids. Renamed to
Fort Verde when the US Army tookover.

Four restored structures from the old fort includes a museum of
pioneer and military artifacts.

Cottonwood
Early Arizona town dating back to 1874 named for a stand of 16 large
cottonwood trees found nearby.
Nearby is the ruins of an old indian pueblo - Tuzigoot National Monument.
Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Located off 10th street and named
for a large horse skeleton found nearby by local children. Native Americans
and Spanish conquistadors passed through here. Today this stretch of
the Verde River has a well stocked fishing pond, camping, picnic area
and good hiking trails.

Jerome
First discovered in 1582 by Spanish missionaries who found the
natives using copper mines in the Verde Valley. In 1886, Eugene Jerome
of New York started a copper smelter operation. At one time Jerome had
a population of 15,000 but became a virtual ghost town in 1953 when
the copper mines shut down.

Some restored homes are open to public during the Home Tour in May.
Scenic Route 89A
A special strecth of highway starting in
Flagstaff and running south through
Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon,
ending at Jerome. This road is steep and narrow, not recommended for
vehicles pulling long trailers.

developer of the rich United Verde Extension mine in the early 1900s.
