Sunset Crater Volcano Visitor Center
Today stands the 1,000 foot high cinder cone of a volcano
that first erupted about 1064 AD and was active intermittantly
for the next 200 years. Surrounding area contains cinders, lava flows
and spatter cones. The bright red hues provide brilliant contrast
to surround dark rock and is quite picturesque. Discovered
by John Wesley Powell in 1892 who gave it the name.
The ash fallout made the surrounding area particularly
productive for farming for the similar time period. Many indian ruins
are found nearby including
Walnut Canyon and
Wupatki.
Notice: In winter the monument is sometimes
closed due to snowfall.
