First discovered in 1582 by Spanish missionaries who found the natives using copper mines in the Verde Valley.
Jerome's modern history began in 1876 when three prospectors staked claims on rich copper deposits.
They sold out to a group which formed the United Verde Copper Company in 1883.
In 1886, Eugene Jerome of New York started a copper smelter operation.
At one time Jerome had a population of 15,000 but became a virtual ghost town in 1953 when
the copper mines shut down.
