Totem Poles originate with Native American tribes of the Southeast Alaska and British Columbian regions. The Tlingit tribe is predominate in this artform but the Haida and Tsimshian tribes also participate.
Totem poles were not originally meant to be painted or maintained - they usually disintegrate over about sixty years. Many are seen with grass and moss still attached.
Many stands of totem poles are found in this region are usually quite distinctive.
