Sitka Tourism City and Bureau of Sitka Travel Sitka Hello Sitka Big Blue Charters Sitka Weather |
Sitka was the capital of both Russian and American Alaska Territory from 1799 to 1906. This historic city sits in the shadow of the volcano Mount Edgecumbe. Sitka (pop: 8900) is a unified city-borough located on the west side of Baranof Island in the Alexander Archipelago. It is the fourth-largest city by population in Alaska. The city hosts the Summer Music Festival in June and the All-Alaska Logging Championships in late June.
Points of Interest:
Sitka National Historical Park (also known as Indian River Park and Totem Park) is the site of the famous Battle of Sitka in 1804 between Russian fur hunters (and their Aleut allies) and Tlingit Warriors defending their fort here at the mouth of Indian River. The park was first created 1890 to preserve the fort. From 1903 to 1905, District Governor John G. Brady set about acquiring Native totem poles from all over Alaska for display at the park; the majority of the poles came from Haida villages located on Prince of Wales Island. Located approximately one–half mile from the Park, the Russian Bishop's House (originally known as the "Russian Mission Orphanage") was constructed out of native spruce in 1842 by Finnish carpenters. It is one of only four surviving examples of Russian Colonial Style architecture in the Western Hemisphere.
