Welcome to Prince William Sound

Located on the south-central coast of Alaska, Prince William Sound has a convoluted coastline, with many islands and fjords, several of which contain tidewater glaciers. The principal barrier islands forming the sound are Montague Island, Hinchinbrook Island, and Hawkins Island.

Its largest port is Valdez, at the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Other settlements on the sound, which contains numerous small islands, include Cordova and Whittier plus the Alaska native villages of Chenega and Tatitlek.

Comprising 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs of the Alaskan coastline that has diverse landforms and terrains, including tundra, rainforest, cliffs, volcanoes, beaches, lakes, and streams.

This facility conducts research to increase our understanding of the Prince William Sound and Copper River Delta ecosystems. These programs emphasize the long-term diversity, and health and sustainability of resources upon which local people depend, while also serving a multitude of stakeholders in the broader region.

Tour Chugach National Forest
The Chugach National Forest is the second-largest and northernmost forest of the USNF service in south central Alaska. It is located in the mountains surrounding Prince William Sound including the eastern Kenai Peninsula and the delta of the Copper River.

The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred as the oil tanker Exxon Valdez was leaving the terminal at Valdez full of oil. The spill occurred at Bligh Reef, about 40 km (25 miles) from Valdez. Although the oil did not reach Valdez, it devastated much of the marine life in the surrounding area. The clean-up of the oil caused a short-term boost to the economy of Valdez.
