Fairbanks Visitors Tour Fairbanks University of Alaska - Fairbanks City of Fairbanks Borough of Fairbanks NewsMiner Daily Pikes Waterfront Lodge |
The Aurora Borealis (northern lights) is a spectacular natural light display visible in the dark sky above the Arctic Regions. They look like curtains of neon shaes flapping in the breeze. Best viewing is on a clear night during the winter months (between Dec and March) when the nights are longer. It is also important to get away from bright city lights. Note that most vacation cruises operating during the summer months that have very short nights and this makes viewing of the Aurora very unlikely. The best vacation option is a land package. We recommend traveling to Fairbanks and then heading for anyone of the nearby mountaintop lodges. They are usually well positioned to catch the best of nature's sky show.
Fairbanks' climate is usually classified as subarctic with long, bitterly cold winters, and short, warm summers, in which much of the annual precipitation falls. In Fairbanks, winter lasts from late September/early October until late April/early May. October through January are the snowiest, and snow is limited from February to May.
