Welcome to Juneau Alaska
Juneau (pop: 30,990) is the State Capitol of Alaska and scene of the first
Gold Strike in 1880. Until 1944, this town was
one of the world's largest producers of low-grade gold ore.
The area of Juneau is larger than that of Rhode Island and Delaware individually and almost as large as the two states combined.
Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island.
Visit historic South Franklin St that recreates the feel of the 1898 gold rush era.
As the capital of Alaska, the primary employer in Juneau, by a large margin, is government. This includes the federal government, state government, municipal government
the local airport, the local hospital, harbors, school district, and the University of Alaska Southeast.
Local mines also contribute to the economy including Greens Creek, and the Kensington Gold Mine.
Admiralty Island National Monument
Most of the monument is designated as the Kootznoowoo Wilderness to protect the protect the prolific rainforest vegetation
and abundant wildlife, including Grizzley and Black Bears. Many species of salmon, whales, mountain goats, and deer live here.
Tour Tongass Rain Forest
One of the last unspoiled and largest temperate rain forests of the
world, the Tongass Rain Forest hugs the North American Coastline
from Kodiak Island in Alaska and stretches as far south as Northern California.
It is home to the densest biomass on Planet Earth.
