This 100-acre zoological park use to be quite a nice zoo with quite an admirable collection of species particular to this region of Asia. It had been built on the edge of the Kabul River with help from the zoo in Cologne, Germany.

Of course that was before the ravages of 20-plus years of guerilla warfare and accompaning poverty. Today there are barely 19 species being cared for including a handful of wolves and monkeys.

Particularly poignant is the plight of their lion, Margan. In the early 1990's the lion was injured and left blind in one eye by a grenade thrown by a guerilla whose brother the day before had entered the cage and been attacked and killed by the lion. This creater has a lunch tab of $14 a day, which is most than what many Kabul residents earn in a month.

The animals' welfare is a low priority for Kabul residents right now who are overwelmed with their own troubles. The zoo's nickel entrance fee generates only about $300 a month which will hardly offset its $6,000/month operating expenses. Even the zoo's director has gone unpaid since July.

The North Carolina Zoological Soceity is spearheading an effort to raise funds to send experience veterinarians and logistics experts to Kabul in the near future to check the animals and install heaters and cleaning equipment. Eventually it is hoped that funds can be raised to repair animal dens, fix water lions and install electricity. Contributions from the general public will be eagerly appreciated.
