Also know as the "Land of the Rainbow Canyons", Zion is famous for its bright red-orange sandstone canyons that merge in shades of white, purple, pink, yellow to create some of the most brilliantly colored rockface in the world. Here the Virgin River has cut through a high plateau to create a geological marvel.

Zion National Park was established in 1919 and is a 147,035 acre preserve. The fossils and sendiments exposed tell the geological history of Mesozoic Period - halfway between the ancient history of the Grand Canyon and the more recent Juriassic Period of the Bryce Canyon.

As recently as 1976 and incredible discovery was made in the park when a population of minute snails was discovered in a park spring. With a population between 10,000 to 15,000, these snails comprise a distinct species that is believed to have survived over 10 million years.

Another marvel of Zion is its "hanging gardens" where the cliffsides come alive during spring and summer in an array of columbine, shooting-star, cardinal flower and other beautiful blossoms. One of the most unique is the sacred datura which grows along the canyon. Reaching a height of over two feet with a large white trumpet blossom that opens in evening and wilts in the morning.

Springdale is a small town located at the southwest entrance to Zion National Park. There are facilities here to accomodated individuals and groups eager to explore this great natural wonder.

Grafton Ghost Town
First settled in 1859 on tthe scenic banks of the Virgin River just below Grafton Mesa inside Zion National Park. Grafton's unoccupied log and adobe buildings are more than a century old and have been featured in Hollywood films.

O.C. Tanner Amphitheater

Certainly one of the best outdoor theaters in the world - located at the base of the Zion Canyon West Rim 2,000-foot towers. Look for evening multimedia presentation on the wonders of the Upper Colorado River canyonlands. Also during the summertime many outdoor concerts are set here.
Zion-Mt Carmel Highway: - SR-9, an eleven mile scenic stretch passes through the park. It passes through the mile-long Zion Tunnel which includes window-like galleries to enjoy the view.
Kolob Canyons Road: 5.2 mile road from I-15 (near Kanarraville) leads into the northwest corner of the park. This canyon is a deeper shade of red than Zion Canyon. Sheer walls create a 1,500 feet deep box canyon. Visitors Center.
Zion Canyon Scenic Drive: 12 mile round trip leads up Zion Canyon following the North Fork of the Virgin River. It passes by such dominant scenic features as the Twin Brothers, Mountain of the Sun, Red Arch and the Great White Throne. Visitors Center.
Great White Throne: 2,400 foot monolith that begins at its base colored deep red and then fades into pink, gray and finally a bright white at the top.
Temple of Sinawava: Large natural amphitheater with two large stone pillars called the Altar and the Pulit in the center. Located at the end of Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.
Weeping Rock Trail: Easy to follow self-guiding nature trail. Begins at the parking lot at the base of Cable Mountain.
Canyon Overlook Trail: Self-guiding trail begins at upper end of Zion Tunnel.
Gateway to the Narrows Trail: Another popular trail, it starts at Temple of Sinawava and goes up the narrow canyon past high cliffs and water springs. Eventually the 500-foot high cliffs get so narrow the trail has to end.
Angels Landing: Scenic vista accessible only by trail.
West Rim Trail: 12.3 mile long backcountry trail.
Grafton Ghost Town: Located 3.5 miles west of Rockville (southwest entrance to Zion Park). Located on private property but visitors are not prohibited. Access is from Utah SR-9 to a Virgin River bridge crossing in Rockville. Old adobe church and other abandoned buildings have been used in some movies.
Wildlife: Mule deer, bobcat, cougar, gray fox and skunk.
Birdwatching: Common birds are swallows, nuthathes, bluebirds and warblers. Hawks and golden eagles nest in the higher pinnacles.
